Sustainability Education

Sustainability Education is an issue of considerable concern and importance. At present, it is inexistent everywhere except for a few rare exceptions.The paradigm is education that has little or no sustainability basis or knowledge, leaving the graduates free to inflict the most egregious damage to the planet. The results are here for everyone to see and experience, unfortunately. The concern is extremely urgent everywhere. The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scientific report indicates that the planet is warming faster than ever predicted, in addition to all the serious crisis in water, food, air, soil, biodiversity, plants, forests and animals, rivers and oceans. Clearly, everyone should be seriously concerned about these issues, and take action everywhere without delay. A special United Nations Climate Change Summit has been scheduled for September 23, 2014.

We are in conversations with several universities worldwide to create new sustainability studies and Centers of Excellence for state of the art Schools of Engineering Sustainability in the nearest future possible. We propose the creation of new multi- and interdisciplinary Schools of Engineering Sustainability, using integrative methods that take into account the complete life cycle loop of mass and energy for air, water, soil, food, wastes and biodiversity, by utilizing renewable, sustainable, non-toxic, organic and solar methods and technologies. We know the solutions to halt and reverse global warming. All it needs to be done is to teach and apply them.

The courses and curriculum will have sustainability at its central core, sustainability being the subject of instruction and learning, its science and the appropriate integrated technologies that can be used to enable students to find or create employment in sustainable activities. All other conventional sciences, e.g., math, physics, chemistry, are planetary and used as an aid to facilitate the task of understanding sustainability’s usefulness and effectiveness.

After completion of the required number of credits, formal degrees will be conferred by the University and the School of Sustainable Engineering to the graduating students. All degrees will have compulsive coursework consisting of:

1) Sustainability Science required core courses, and

2) Compulsive courses from a selection pool, such as:

Sustainability Economics;

Biodiversity Sustainability;

Energy Sustainability;

Agriculture Sustainability: Water, Soil, Watershed and Organic Food;

Sustainability Ethics and Education;

Building Design Sustainability;

Sustainability Business and Entrepreneurship;

English Vocabulary for Sustainability Engineering and Science,

among the most important, in addition to the general education courses required by law. The sustainability degrees offered by the University will be:
